A 2,340-tonne theatre floating next to the railway
The central concrete block of the Castelldefels Theatre-Auditorium, with the hall and the stage, rests on coaxial springs that isolate it from the trains at the neighbouring station and from the adjoining homes.

1The challenge
A theatre next to a railway station
The Castelldefels Theatre-Auditorium stands next to the railway station and is surrounded by homes. Every passing train sends vibration through the ground, and inside the hall that vibration turns into noise: exactly what an auditorium cannot have.
2The idea
A building inside another
The acoustic design separated the hall and the stage into a central concrete block, built free-standing within the building that surrounds it. Audience and performers are therefore isolated twice over: from the trains and from the neighbours.
3The solution
2,340 tonnes on coaxial springs
The Silentflex technical team helped define the specification of the suspension system: the 2,340-tonne block rests on coaxial springs that filter vibration and structure-borne noise before they reach the hall.
4The result
“It has great acoustics”
An artist who performed there put it like this: “It has great acoustics and offers an intimate, pleasant space.” All that a few metres from the railway tracks.
