Ships and shipbuilding
Engines, generator sets, pumps and electronics on board ships and yachts.
Points on the drawing
Listen to the ship
Play the ship and hear what the mounts take out.
Noise reduction
– dB(A)
The engines shake the hull and you hear it in the cabins. On mounts most of it goes; the sea stays.
At night the generators keep running and their hum reaches the cabins. Their mounts cut it at the source.
Best with headphones. Sound synthesised from typical spectra, not a recording.
1Main engine & gearbox
The problem
Main engines, gearboxes and propulsion shafts are the largest source of machinery vibration on board. Mounted rigidly, they pass it straight into the hull and on to the accommodation as structure-borne noise.
What we fit
All-metal engine mounts with a stainless steel wire mesh cushion. No rubber to harden with heat, oil or salt spray, and no maintenance.
Typical choice
Vibration mounts 954202-95420350–7,000 kg · 11–22 Hz
Vibration mounts 9544121,000–3,000 kg · 15–20 Hz
Vibration mounts 954416350–3,000 kg · 15–25 HzThe final choice depends on the load per mount, the speed and the environment. An engineer confirms it with you.
2Diesel generators
The problem
Auxiliary generators run around the clock, at sea and in port. Their vibration reaches cabins and the bridge through the hull, and fatigues the foundation.
What we fit
A fully metallic genset suspension that works in compression and tension, in stainless or painted steel.
Typical choice
Vibration mounts 954416350–3,000 kg · 15–25 Hz
Vibration mounts 95420150–900 kg · 18–25 Hz
Stainless axial vibration mounts70–1,400 kg · 15–25 HzThe final choice depends on the load per mount, the speed and the environment. An engineer confirms it with you.
3Pumps & compressors
The problem
Pumps, compressors and fans are smaller but numerous and fast-running. Each one adds tonal noise and fatigue loads to its foundation and pipework.
What we fit
Compact all-metal mounts. Models such as the S402 work in any direction, so they can go under, beside or above the machine.
Typical choice
Vibration mounts S40230–700 kg · 15–20 Hz
Stainless axial vibration mounts70–1,400 kg · 15–25 Hz
Electronics and aeronautics vibration mount 70010.3–4.5 kg · 6–12 HzThe final choice depends on the load per mount, the speed and the environment. An engineer confirms it with you.
4Funnel, exhaust & pipework
The problem
Exhaust lines, pipes and ducts grow with heat and take a hit every time the bow slams into a wave. Rigid supports crack and pass engine vibration up the funnel.
What we fit
Flexible all-metal supports for chimneys, pipes and ducts. Fully metallic, so fire, temperature and humidity are not a problem.
Typical choice
The final choice depends on the load per mount, the speed and the environment. An engineer confirms it with you.
5Bridge electronics & racks
The problem
Navigation, control and communication racks have to keep working through engine vibration and wave impacts. Connectors loosen and boards crack long before anything looks broken.
What we fit
Wire rope isolators: all-metal, non-magnetic and multi-directional, for vibration and shock at once. The same solution protects electronics racks on French Navy ships.
Typical choice
Wire rope isolators5–1,000 kg · 7–15 Hz
Vibration mount 1202 / 9141–60 kg · 15–25 Hz
Electronics and aeronautics vibration mount 70020.7–60 kg · 6–12 HzProven at sea: General Electric (2011), protection of electronics racks in military ships.
The final choice depends on the load per mount, the speed and the environment. An engineer confirms it with you.
6Forward equipment & slamming
The problem
When the bow slams into a wave, equipment in the forward part of the vessel takes short, hard shocks on top of the usual vibration.
What we fit
Shock mounts with long travel absorb the impact energy and bring the equipment back to position.
Typical choice
The final choice depends on the load per mount, the speed and the environment. An engineer confirms it with you.
